The Beginning

How I would describe my style today would be a mixture of hard and soft textures with quirky elements. One of my favourite examples of this is wearing fun skirts/dresses and Dr Martens.

My very first pair of Dr Martens.

In 2013 my mum and I went shopping for my 18th birthday. I went into a shoe store and fell in love with a pair of 14 eye Dr Martens with embroidered roses. Until then I’d religiously worn converse; my favourite being a knee high pair with buckles all the way up. As soon as we’d bought them I immediately put them on and wore them around for the rest of the day. It was as if at this moment they became super-glued to my feet as I pretty much didn’t wear any other shoes for the next year.

Later in the day I stumbled across an amazing skirt with a crazy graphic print sporting images of ice cream cones, flowers, portraits and so many other bright items. I imagined pairing this skirt with my newly purchased Dr Martens. This was the first example of my quirky style that is now associated with me. Sure my knee high converse were out there but I never really thought about what I was pairing them with. They just went on with everything.

The graphic skirt. Old and battered but still in my wardrobe.

I look back at these items fondly because they became so integral to defining my style today. I still have them both but wore them so often they are both a bit damaged (especially the Dr Martens, they went through a lot).
